Honestly, with how you write raps, I thought you were a kid. (Guess I didn't check the 2014 date for when you started on this site). But when you said you were like 40 or whatever it was in some thread, I was generally like, wtf. Cuz it seemed like everyone was being nice on you in their critiques, like "whatever, he's having fun. It's all poetry". I mean, I love poetry, like Jay Electronica or Raekwon or Nas, but sometimes it's also just used as a euphemism.

Ahh to be honest I don’t feel great about going off on Mal. Getting pissed off about something as daft as opinions on rhyming puns on a message board is totally ridiculous. I just wasn’t in the mood to be mugged off by him of all people. I think Slim Shady LP maybe more technically proficient, but the darker vibe of the MM LP appeals to me more.

Shaman, I think you’d love Aesop. I hope so. He’s my favourite by a mile. Any of his more recent albums would be a good place to start. Maybe try Spirit World Field Guide, Garbology, The Impossible Kid or Black Hole Superette lps. Do yourself a favour and try all four, the guy can’t miss.

This 3 rounder is exciting for sure. Banter aside, it’s an honour to battle Jack in the finals. If he continues on his current trajectory he’ll be unbeatable before long, I’m glad to be battling him now while I’ve even got a chance.

Edit: Just saw your link Mal. Oops, 0-7 that time. I’m not convinced line length was the problem though. The only person who said your lines were too wordy to follow was Slayerr, and he’s not the sharpest tool in the box. Lovely guy but not the brightest (j/k).

I never quoted Em. I didn’t say that all of his songs have that many syllables per line, just that they often do. Four head nods isn’t the definition of a bar, it depends on the time signature. “Winning is victory’s only mistake” the fuck you on about? Acting like you’re a source of wisdom. Ok, dope. Will check him out. I actually rarely listen to new rap these days. I think the last time I really fell in love with something new was Jay Electronica back in like 09-10. But then he teamed up with Jay Z and fell off big time, but I still consider him among the greatest MC's ever. The internet ep Style Wars was so poetic, flowing, original, etc. But I probably gravitated towards battle rap, because that was the place where the art of emceeing was actually kept alive. Oh, and Action Bronson was dope too, ofc. But I'm sure there are many gems out there that I've missed.

You said you were the second best in the audio battle and just came off way less humble than I thought you were. The poetic thing is what other ppl, including myself, said about your bars in battles. Because you'd mention stuff like "the ocean waves" or whatever. Not because of the presense of any actual poetry.

Battling to a beat is ancient, Mal.* Havn't you noticed it's all acapella? Eminem is a bad example for battle rap. Take someone like Dizaster instead. That guy can barely rap to a beat. I doubt that he ever thought about staying within the bar line.

And anyway, what makes a good emcee varies for different ppl. Both Jack and Virb are good MC's, ofc, so we are talking in more general terms here. I havn't really seen anything from you that blew me away. Virb said "I'll have the godly pious gothic friar Tom Aquinas .. something something .. get Christ cross like Pontius Pilate". Maybe if he said that at a URL event, lots of ppl would be halfway talking and not paying attention, just waiting for something about guns. But tbh very few ppl can write like that.

So yeah, like Slayerr said, opinions are like assholes, we all have one, or in latin: de gustibus non disputandum est. But I don't really believe in that. You can e.g. start with Alexander Baumgarten's Aesthetica and take it from there. I'd personally recommend the first half of the essay "On the Concept of the Beautiful" by the little known Bohemian priest Bernard Bolzano.


*Actually, we still do it in Denmark. But freestyle culture here was huge, so I guess it kinda had a revival.

Yeah Diz is a great example of wordy battle bars working well. Thanks Shaman, very good point. Diz’s densest material can be on the cusp of overwhelming as the momentum carries it through, but it adds to the intensity. It’s popular despite being quite challenging to keep up with. I like that. Obviously I’m no Diz, but his existence shows that that kind of stylistic choice is valid.
